Now, a word from Mr. DeWitt, our shop ride leader:
Hi everyone,
Colorado Springs is having a weeklong celebration of the Pro Tour of Colorado and our Tuesday ride has been picked as a feature ride in Colorado Springs! So on the Tuesday, Aug 21 we will be starting and finishing at different locations vs our normal start finish at ProCycling. Please read the following and spread the word that we will be starting from America the Beautiful Park on Aug 21. Our ride will be part of the marketing campaign so we expect plenty of new riders. Please read below for more details:
The Tuesday ProCycling Group ride is a “No drop, No wait” ride. It is relatively fast as it is comprised primarily of racers from various clubs throughout town. It is a “No drop, No wait ride” in that the ride consists of a series of out and back hill climbs. When the leaders reach the top, they turn around and descend back down the hill. Riders still climbing turn around and join the descent as they go by. The group sticks together until the next climb and repeat.
The ride normally begins and ends at the ProCycling Bike Shop at 5:30 PM. However on August 21, the ride will support the City of Colorado Springs “Pro Tour Rally Week” by starting at America the Beautiful Park and ending at City Rock. There will be refreshments and a raffle for prizes at the finish. All ride participants will be required to sign a waiver before the ride. There will be two groups; the faster group leaves two minutes ahead of the slower group. Dan Durland will lead the 1st group and Larry DeWitt will ride sweep on the second group.
The route for Tuesday, August 21st is as follows:
From America the Beautiful Park head south along the bike path until the bridge. Turn right over the bridge and follow the path to the Walmart parking lot. Right on to 8th Street then left on Lower Gold Camp Road. Stay together along Lower Gold Camp Road until it crosses 21st Street. At this point the climb begins. Stay on Gold Camp Road until the pavement ends. The first riders to reach the end of the pavement turn around and collect the remaining climbers. IT IS IMPORTANT TO TURN AROUND AND JOIN THE DESCENDERS AS THEY GO BY! If you do not turn around you are on your own. Continue to descend Gold Camp to Hydra Drive. Right at Hydra then left on Orion. Descend Orion and continue on Orion until it ends at Park View. Turn left on Park View then right on Cresta. Follow Cresta to Cheyenne Blvd, right on Cheyenne Blvd keeping together until the visitor center at the base of Cheyenne Canyon. The climb begins here and ends at the dirt parking lot above Helen Hunt Falls. When the leaders reach the parking lot they will turn around and again collect those who are still climbing as they descend. Again it is important to turn around and join the descent or you are on your own. Once at the bottom of Cheyenne Canyon, follow Cheyenne Blvd to Tejon. Left on Tejon, ride through town then turn right on Kiowa. Ride one block east on Kiowa, cross Nevada, and City Rock is on the right.
